“It is a clean sweep in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. We expected to win in both the states but securing 325 seats in UP and 57 in Uttarakhand has been overwhelming,” said BJP State President K. Haribabu.

Talking to The Hindu after leading a victory rally on Saturday, Mr. Haribabu attributed the landslide victory of BJP to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on development and welfare schemes.

“Vikas (Development) was his poll plank and it appealed to the people. Moreover, the people were immensely benefited by all his pro-poor welfare schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Jeevan Suraksha, PM Jeevan Jyothi, Atal Pension Yojana, PM Mudra Yojana and PM Fasal Bima Yojana. Most importantly, free LPG connection to the poor was a big hit,” said Mr. Haribabu.

Mr.. Haribabu is also confident that BJP will form government both in Goa and Manipur. “We have alliances and we shall form government with them in both the States,” he said.

Advantage

On whether the UP win will give BJP the advantage or the desired support in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha), he said, “Yes, it will give us the desired advantage. From UP there are about 31seats for RS. And every year about 8 to 10 get nominated and so in the next three years we expect our count to go up in the Upper House,” he said.

BJP MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju was ecstatic about BJP’s win. “We will now focus on Kerala, AP, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Karnataka. And our alliance partners such as TDP will continue to sail with us,” he said.
