In an attempt to provide better services to motorists and all other stakeholders, the Transport Department is in the process of integrating vehicle insurance data with its website.
The move is intended to enable the vehicle owners to rule out the prospect of buying fake insurance policies from unscrupulous agents, apart from saving the insurer firms from the hassle of running around courts over the issue of forged documents furnished by their agents, in case of accidents.
How it works
According to the officials, the move would also ensure the effective enforcement of motor vehicle rules, apart from facilitating payment of compensation to the dependants of victims of road accidents. When the vehicle owners fail to pay the insurance premium or takes a fake policy to avoid paying high premium amount, they would not get any compensation in case of accidents.
“Once the insurance data is integrated with the online registration system, the motorists need not carry the hard copy of the documents all the time. As the data will be integrated with the software used by the Police Department, the motorists can show the documents on their mobile phones as the complete data will be made available online,” an official of Transport Department said.
It may be recalled that the online registration of motor vehicles at the automobile showrooms itself was introduced in Visakhapatnam on March 1, 2016.
The system, a brainchild of Transport Commissioner N. Balasubrahmanyam, has caught the fancy of vehicle buyers and motorists as it has eliminated the need to run around the Transport Department offices. More and more features have been added during the last two years to make the system foolproof .
The errors of omission and commission in the entry of data at the dealers’ end led to the adoption of an updated version to extract the personal details of the owner from the Aadhaar website and the vehicle details from the ‘vahan website’, after integrating these two with the online system of AP Transport Department.
No financial implication
Meanwhile, the AP Transport Authority has requested the insurance companies to integrate their data with the online system, as it would not have any financial implication on them. Besides, it will also benefit the insurance companies by doing away with the problem of fake insurance policies and thereby ensuring greater compliance.
However, the move, due to unknown reasons, has drawn a lukewarm response from the insurance companies so far, according to sources.
