With an aim to improve the night life in the city a night safari park is being proposed to be set up replacing the existing zoo park, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao announced.

A botanical park and a night safari would come in the place of the zoo to help the elderly and others have a place to go and spend some time, the Minister said speaking at the inaugural of the 66th Vanamahotsavam festival organised at the Kambalakonda Nature Park here on Friday.

The proposal to shift the zoo spread over 625 acres on the beach has been broached with the Chief Minister, the HRD Minister said. The idea has been discussed with all the stakeholders and the district administration and everyone has in principle accepted the idea, the Minister claimed.

The zoo would be shifted to the Kambalakonda Nature Park or any other spacious location and more animals brought in to make the Vizag zoo a must visit destination, he explained.

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park was declared open to public in May 1977 and it has over 800 species of animals with a focus on endemic species.

The Minister earlier planted a sapling on the Kambalakonda Park and laid the foundation stone for the Visakha City Forest project.
