6 students suspended for taking drugs

Andhra University has suspended six students studying engineering, including three final-year students, for allegedly taking drugs at the campus hostel.

The incident took place on Friday and the students were suspended from writing the next semester, after an enquiry by the university officials. This was confirmed by Registrar V. Umamaheswara Rao.

The students were caught by the security guards of the hostel and one among them, a fourth year student of bio-technology, was in heavily drugged state and behaving violently. He even tried to enter the girl’s hostel, said sources.

According to Prof. Umamaheswara Rao, the students were counselled and their parents were summoned.

“One among them is a son of a daily wage labourer and we have sternly warned all the students,” the Registrar said.

Though no police case was booked, Human Resource Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao asked the university officials to take strict action against the erring students.
