VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as the work on the Polavaram multipurpose project is going on and is scheduled to be completed by 2018, the lift scheme at Purushottapatnam on the Godavari river will be completed in nine months, Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao has said.

The lift scheme will stabilise the Yeleru ayacut of one lakh acres to use the 10 to 15 TMC of water in the reservoir for industrial and domestic needs of Visakhapatnam, he told reporters here on Tuesday.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu laid the foundation to the lift scheme in the first week of the month.

Water will be lifted at Purushottapatnam using 10 pumps into the Left Main Canal 10 km away at 1.8 km of the canal. From there it will flow by gravity. At 58 km, a regulator will be constructed to send 800 cusecs into Yeleru river to stabilise the ayacut. Four pumps will be erected to lift 1400 cusecs into the Yeleru reservoir as and when required to maintain supply to the city and the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

All the three components would be completed in nine months, said the Minister. The estimated cost is Rs. 1,551 crore.

The strengthening and deepening of the Kanithi Balancing Reservoir, damaged in Hudhud cyclone, has also been taken up at a cost of Rs. 44 crore to receive water and so far Rs. 12 crore was spent on it.

The 1,300 cusecs will flow in the LMC up to 177 km. Mr. Uma Maheswara Rao said reservoirs, including at Pedapudi, Boneru, Veeranarayanapalem and Tatipudi extension, had to be completed as part of the LMC with provision of water to tanks in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts.

The Minister said the Chief Minister would launch work on the diaphragm wall and manufacturing of 48 steel gates for the Polavaram project on January 29.
