Affordable housing projects comprising one lakh houses will be taken up at Achyutapuram and Anandapuram on the suburbs of the city so as to drive economic growth, Chief Secretary S.P. Tucker has said.

The “economic cities,” to be taken up by the government in association with private construction agencies, will be self-sufficient with education, health, shopping and entertainment, he said at a meeting here with builders, representatives of employees and entrepreneurs, including those at Autonagar.

A total of one lakh houses were planned with 65,000 housing units at Achyutapuram and 35,000 at Anandapuram and an in-principle decision taken on the four projects at the meeting by the Chief Secretary, an official press release said. While 330 acres of private builders and 380 acres of APIIC land was identified at Achyutapuram, at Anandapuram 400 acres of government land was identified. Work would be launched next month.

Of the five lakh families in the city two lakh need houses of their own and the projects envisage providing them houses close to the place of work, particularly at industrial hubs Achyutapuram and Nakkapalle, avoiding the hardship of travelling more than 30 km, Mr. Tucker said. Advantage should be taken of the Rs.2.2 lakh interest subvention being provided by the Union government for houses in 30 to 60 square meters, he said.

Of the 18,000 employees in the IT sector, 10,000 need houses and more were expected to come and LIG and HIG houses sector should cater to them.

The construction of such a large number of houses would infuse a capital of Rs.15,000 crore to Rs.20,000 crore, it was estimated.

The Chief Secretary assured private agencies of co-operation in identifying the potential buyers, support of AP Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDC) and getting financial assistance from banks.
