Fishermen demand package

They threaten to intensify their agitation

Fishermen, who are going to be displaced due to the construction of the Naval Alternative Operations Depot at Rambilli along with fishermen from other parts of the district staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Monday demanding implementation of the rehabilitation package for the displaced persons.

The protest was held under the banner of Traditional Fish Workers. Fishermen of Rambilli area have been protesting since May 26 and since the Government did not respond they staged the dharna in front of the Collectorate and also warned that the agitation would be spread to other parts of the country.

Some of the demands were providing permanent employment to all the displaced, payment of daily wages for fishermen dependent on the Sarada river for three-and-a-half years, monthly benefit of Rs. 4,500 till permanent employment was provided, provision of welfare measures by adopting the displaced , rehabilitation of all those who would lose their houses, implementation of rehabilitation package for women engaged in selling fish and widows, free education to children in the Kendriya Vidyalayas and free medical care in the Naval hospital. Union's president T.K. Rehaman and others led the protest programme.
