Director of Factories G. Bala Kishore on Monday inspected the accident sites at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
Mr. Kishore, who was accompanied by VSP Director (operations) Umesh Chandra, visited raw material handling complex and steel melt shop where three accidents occurred in a span of eight days causing heavy production loss to the public sector Navratna company.
Mr. Umesh Chandra, who was on a tour to the National Institute of Technologies cut short his tour and returned to the city on being told about the seriousness of the accident on Sunday. The incident could have become a major catastrophe had the conveyer belt was not cut immediately to prevent spread of fire to other unaffected parts of the steel plant.
In a related development, VSP Chairman-cum-Managing Director P.K. Bishnoi before flying to Mumbai on an official tour told the heads of the departments to be more alert to prevent recurrence of accidents.
Unions' plea
Various unions, including Visakha Steel Workers' Union (recognised union), met Director (projects) A.P. Choudhury and explained him about the lapses on the part of the officials in observing fool-proof safety mechanism. Stating that the company had officers and employees in the ratio of 1:2.5, they said there was not much work for many officers.
Mr. Choudhury understood to have promised the union leaders the required steps to take remedial measures.
