750 in custody as teachers protest against CPS

Around 750 were taken into police custody as teachers in large numbers participated a ‘Siege the Collectorate’ protest, demanding cancellation of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) here on Saturday. They were released later in the day.

The demonstration was held in response to the State-wide call given by Federation of Andhra Pradesh Teachers Organisations while the Steering Committee organised the programme at the district-level.

On Saturday morning, scores of teachers, carrying placards, gathered at the Collectorate building ans shouting slogans against the government. The police personnel, in their attempt to quell the mob, took hundreds of protesters into custody. Among the arrested were Jajulu (UTF), Venkatapathi Raju (APTF), E.Paidiraju (STF), Sivaji (Headmasters’ Association) and Madhu (DTF).

3,000 teachers take part

“Around 7,000 teachers from all over the district applied for mass casual leave in support of the demand and 3,000 teachers, including 1,000 women, turned up for the protest at the Collector’s office,” Mr. Paidiraju claimed.

Among those arrested were also the teachers covered the under old pension scheme who were supporting the demand of their colleagues under CPS, he said.

Addressing the protest, the teachers’ federation leaders said the State and Central governments should understand the gravity of the issue and find a solution to it. They said only united struggle would lead to the CPS being scrapped.
