NDRF teams being positioned in advance at vulnerable places, says OSD Relief Aravind Kumar. In view of past experience we are coordinating with the Railways and have made arrangements for provision of milk, water and food packets at all the stations in the region, in case the passing trains have to be detained in case of disruption of tracks.

The aim of the Government is to minimise loss of life or property due to the impact of very severe cyclonic storm Hudhud and the administration is taking all steps in that direction, OSD Relief Aravind Kumar said.

The cyclone is likely to be very severe and to ensure that everyone stays indoor the district administration has declared a holiday for all schools and educational institutions on Saturday and for all establishments and industries from second shift, he said speaking after a review meeting with district administration, police, Navy and others on the pre and post cyclone preparedness.

One of the major challenges is getting the people living in vulnerable areas to leave their homes and shift into shelters during the cyclone. Most persons resist as they are not assured of protection of their goods which they would leave back home, it is the responsibility of the district administration and police to give them an assurance.

The NDRF teams are being positioned in advance at vulnerable places to instil confidence among the residents, he pointed out. Each NDRF team that comprises 45 persons can be broken into three teams, which means that we have 33 teams available for deployment along the coast, Mr. Aravind Kumar explained.

In view of past experience we are coordinating with the Railways and have made arrangements for provision of milk, water and food packets at all the stations in the region, in case the passing trains have to be detained in case of disruption of tracks. The police are coordinating with the NHAI authorities and police in other districts to stop the traffic in case of any damage to the highway or disruption due to the natural calamity, he explained. Further, 14 satellite phones have been allotted and they would be given to teams depending upon the situation.
