Cancer is growing at an alarming pace in India with 10 lakh new patients being detected every year. The only way to bring down the incidence of cancer is to create awareness among the people on the need for early detection and treatment using the latest technology, CEO of Apollo Hospitals for AP and Telangana States Sandeep Chatrath has said.
The burger – cola culture, excessive stress, sedentary lifestyles, lack of exercise and growing pollution were the major causes for increasing incidence of cancer. India has the highest incidence of oral cancer in the world due to the habit of chewing pan masala and khaini, Dr. Sandeep told media persons, who met him on Friday, on the eve of World Cancer Day.
Lung cancer is the second most prevalent cancers in India and among women it is breast and cervical cancers.
Regular screening helps in early detection and would contribute to improved survival rate. Cancer conclaves and workshops were being conducted for doctors to train them on how to manage cancer in the best possible way. Tumour boards should be formed to adopt different treatment methodologies in different cases, based on the need.
