World Cancer Day observed

Oncology institutes in the city observed World Cancer Day on Thursday. The institutes also organised programmes to promote awareness about the illness with the theme, ‘We can, I can’.

Speaking at an awareness programme, Amercian Oncology Institute medical director and medical oncologist N. Subba Rao said around 7,00,000 people died from cancer in India every year. The figure of deaths from cancer is likely to go up to around 1.2 million by 2035.

Vijayawada Mayor Koneru Sridhar launched various awareness programmes organised by Roots Health Foundation. Foundation chairman P.V.S. Vijayabhaskar said the foundation conducted 5k walk, human chain, cycle rally and pink ribbon programmes every year on World Cancer Day. ACB DSP V. Gopalakrishna, ACP Sravan Kumar and Tondepu Hanumantha Rao were present.
