In yet another act of discrimination against the girl child, a 23-year-old woman, Akula Ramya, allegedly killed her four-day-old baby after being reportedly abetted by her mother, A. Durga.
Alert locals informed the police, who recovered the body from the Ryves Canal on Thursday. The Governorpet police solved the case in eight hours and took Ramya and her mother into custody.
“During questioning, Ramya and Durga reportedly confessed that they decided to get rid of the girl child, who was born outside the marriage and also due to poverty,” city Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang told The Hindu .
Separated
A native of Meerjapuram village in Nuzvid mandal, Ramya was married to her maternal uncle in 2013, and they got separated allegedly due to family disputes.
She was working in a poultry feed manufacturing company at Kothapalli in Krishna district, where she reportedly developed extramarital affair with one Anwar, who is absconding.
On November 25, Ramya was admitted to the Old Government General Hospital (GGH), where she gave birth to a girl child the next day. However, Ramya and her mother reportedly had an argument on taking care of the baby.
‘Advice not followed’
“Against medical advice, the mother got discharged from the hospital at 4 p.m, on Thursday, and the baby was in good health at the time of discharge,” according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) T.K. Rana.
“We checked the outward and discharge records of five hospitals, including Old GGH, and swooped on Ramya, who left the hospital at 4 p.m. One Tulasi, who observed the baby wrapped in clothes and floating on waters, alerted ‘Dial 100’ (Police Control Room) and we responded in five minutes,” Governorpet Circle Inspector P.E. Pavan Kumar Reddy said.
Three teams headed by SIs M. Ravindra Babu, D. Ram Kumar, head constable Bhagavan Naik, constables Md. Imran Khan and K. Lakshminarayana rushed to Meerjapuram village and took the accused into custody on Friday.
Cases have been registered against the accused under Sections 320 of IPC (murder) and Section 75 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, Mr. Reddy said.
