‘Watch out for symptoms of ADHD among children'

‘If left untreated, it can affect cognitive abilities of children'

If children exhibit one of these tendencies for over a period of time -- paying little attention to detail, commit careless mistakes, does not listen and loses things -- the parents should watch out-since the symptoms can well be signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The ADHD is a psychiatric disorder in children, if left untreated could lead to serious psychological disorder, impairing the cognitive abilities of children.

Speaking at a session on “Recent Trends in Management of ADHD,” at the Mid Term CME programme organised by Indian Psychiatric Society here on Sunday, noted child psychiatrist from Chennai Jayanthini said that management of ADHD in children would become effective it the disorder was treated as a neuro-biological disorder. “ADHD could be effectively managed by blending the scientific treatment with the art of management. Parents and the children should be made to understand that it's a neuro-biological disorder,” Dr. Jayanthini said.

Usually children diagnosed with ADHD have been found to be anaemic, with low blood sugar levels and suffering from insomnia.

. The CME programme on theme “Recent Trends in the Management of Psychiatric Disorders,” was hosted by the Guntur Psychiatric Society.

Earlier inaugurating the programme, principal of Guntur Medical College Ch. Vara Prasad lauded the efforts of Indian Psychiatric Society in taking the message of psychological disorders to the public.
