The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is initiating measures to complete the construction of long-pending bridges at Madhuranagar. It has already written to the Electricity Department requesting for shifting of transformers and electric poles for laying approach roads.

The construction works commenced in 2009, and since then, the project has been facing hurdles, including clearing of encroachments and dearth of funds, among others. But, things seem to be falling in place for the project after much delay.

VMC Commissioner G. Veerapandian, who inspected the works on Tuesday, directed officials to instruct APTransco for shifting four transformers and about 12 electric poles for laying approach roads on either side of the bridges.

He also instructed them to take up road widening works at the Devinagar end in alignment with the master plan. He wanted officials to complete the pipeline laying works in the locality to be completed at the earliest to avoid hindrance for the approach road works.

VMC had taken up the construction of two bridges on the Eluru Canal and the Budameru drain as part of work on the link road to the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor with Rs.7.80 crore and Rs.7.94 crore respectively. The link road from Madhura Nagar was aimed at connecting Ajithsingh Nagar and Vambay Colony with the city, besides reducing travel time for residents from Vambay Colony in reaching to Autonagar. Presently, majority of residents, who work in different industries at Autonagar take detour via Ajitsinghnagar flyover to reach Autonagar.

Corporation officials are also expediting the clearing of 133 encroachments on the Eluru canal bund. Once the site is free from encroachments, the approach road works would be over in three months, a senior official said.
