VMC draws up plans for litter-free streets

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has embarked on an ambitious plan to make the streets litter-free. The Corporation has redesigned the garbage clearance procedure and is hoping that within a month it will have a clear picture on the litter-free streets.

The Corporation has 101 route managers to track the movement of dumper placers and tippers carrying the garbage. Each route manager would supervise two to three routes in the city. A log book, hitherto not being recorded with minute details such as time, would be maintained by the route managers.

The route managers would escalate the problems, if any, such as vehicle found to be stranded on the way, to the sanitary inspectors.

The idea of route managers is to ensure that all dumper bins are cleared within 24-hours, and all the garbage reached the dumping yard by 10.30 a.m. every day. If the Corporation succeeded in its endeavours, the people could expect litter free streets.

On Thursday, Municipal Commissioner Md. Abdul Azeem said that the corporation was laying emphasis on sanitation and drinking water. The side drains where manual desilting was not possible would be cleared mechanically. When asked about user charges on garbage collection, he said: “Whatever has come with JNNURM programme are here to stay. The corporation has no plans to levy any new additional burden on the people,” he added.

The VMC lifts more than 500 tons of garbage every day from every nook and corner of the city. As many as 406 dumper bins were placed at various locations in the city, and 30 dumper placers carry the dumper bins to transfer station at Ajithsingh Nagar., where the garbage is transferred onto bigger vehicles to dump it in the yard, said CMOH M. Satyanarayana Raju. An awareness meeting and rally on sanitation etc would be conducted on Saturday, he added.
