Vizag is favoured city for new race course

November 04, 2014 12:35 am | Updated 12:35 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The city of destiny - Visakhapatnam - is all set to pip the other cities and towns in Andhra Pradesh in the race to own the new race course, if and when the new State, decides to have one.

According to experts in racing, Vizag wins the race because it has the necessary infrastructure and the weather is congenial for the horses to stay fit and healthy.

Picturesque

“The other parts of the State are known for its hot and humid conditions throughout the year. The picturesque coastline makes Vizag the most desired city to have a race course, which will boost tourism in the region,” feels Tote In-charge Phani Babu of Hyderabad Race Club at Yelamanchalli complex in the city.

Patronage

Mr. Babu said the process of revenue sharing from racing has already begun from June when Andhra Pradesh was officially bifurcated. “Nearly forty per cent of the revenue generated from the 13 districts through tax is already reaching the exchequer of new Andhra Pradesh. We have tote centres in Kurnool, Kakinada, Vizag, Guntur, Vijayawada and Rajahmundry”.

He said there was gradual increase in patronage by betting public in and around Vijayawada. “In early 1990 we had around 100 punters but now we have more than 1,500 visiting during season, trying their ‘luck’ on horses”.

Horse owners

He said there was a good number of horse owners in the 13 Andhra Pradesh having their horses in the stables of Hyderabad for rearing and training. “We need 100 acres to establish a new race course with state-art facilities for horses, jockeys, members and spectators. Swimming pool, tracks, veterinary hospital, training schools for jockeys and club houses are a must,” he added.

Club at Enekipadu

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Race Club is making efforts to shift its Tote Centre at Yelamanchalli Complex to Enekipadu where it is beginning the construction of an exclusive centre on a one- acre land. “This four-storied building will have all modern facilities for the benefit of the racing public”. The club has received the VUDA approval and has called for global tenders. “We have received 13 applications and in 18 months-time will be have the new administrative and tote centre at Enikepadu”.
