One out of every five eggs produced in India is from Andhra Pradesh. The State stands in the third place in poultry population (11.05 per cent) and it stood second after Tamil Nadu in production of eggs by producing 1,309.59 crore eggs in 2014-15.

All this production will go to waste if the domestic consumption is not strong. The egg which comes in a unique shell of its own is the only farm product that cannot be adulterated. The National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC) is conducting several programmes to promote awareness about the nutritional value of the egg as part of the World Egg Day campaign on Friday. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will the Chief Guest of a meeting to be held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in the morning. Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao will preside. A 2K run is also being organised on the occasion.

NECC has selected Vijayawada city for the World Egg Day campaign in South India, Mumbai is the city for the campaign in the West, Lucknow in the North and Bhubaneswar is the city selected in the East this year.

India is the third largest egg producer in the world after China and USA. The production of Japan and Russian Federation is less than that of India’s.

Andhra Pradesh with a production of 6.49 lakh million tonnes (LMT) is next only to Tamil Nadu that produced 7.2 (LMT). Telangana is in the third place with 5.13 LMT.

Three-fourth (75% ) of total eggs produced in Andhra Pradesh are from four districts, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur.

The Per Capita Egg consumption in AP is 99 eggs per year against the national average of 68 eggs and the recommendation of National Nutrition Council of 180 eggs per head per annum.

The World Egg Day campaign is held each year on the second Friday in October. World Egg Day is a unique opportunity to help propagate the nutritive value of eggs in human nutrition and thus helps in increasing egg consumption which is the main source of protein.

The egg white consists primarily of water (87%) and protein (13%) with all the essential amino acids in the right ratios.

Eggs also contain decent amounts of vitamin A, D, E, K, B5, B6, B12, B2 calcium, phosphorus, folate, selenium and zinc. Eggs are highly fulfilling and tend to make eat fewer calories, helping in losing weight.
