Uttaradi Mutt to conduct ‘Brihati Sahasra Yagam’

May 24, 2014 12:04 am | Updated 12:04 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

City-based Sri Uttaradi Math will perform a rare ritual, ‘Brihati Sahasra Yagam’, on its premises on Canal Road on May 29 and 30 in connection with the 10 anniversary of its reconstruction.

The ritual, mentioned in religious texts ‘Brahmanda Purana’ and ‘Aitareya Upanishad’, was last organised in 2007 in coastal districts. Except Tirupati, no other place hosted it in a long time, said Kanngovi Vasudevachar, head of Uttaradi Math.

Addressing the media on Friday, Mr. Vasudevachar said as many as 10 religious experts (‘Sudha pundits’) from Mumbai, Nasik, Gulbarga and Hospet would conduct the two-day Yagam, which gives the participants “the benefit of doing ‘Haridhyanam’ (worship of the Lord Vishnu) continuously for 100 years”.

A thousand recitals from the Rigveda will be part of the event. The Yagam is intended to invoke the blessings of Sri Lakshmi Sametha Srimannarayana. It will be led by Uttaradi Math ‘Divan’ Prahladacharya and Sri Vidyadheesacharya, brother of Math chief Sri Satyatmateertha. The highlight of the ritual will be ‘Aranimadhanam’ wherein the fire is ignited by causing friction on a piece of wood with holes using a stick. Another striking feature is ‘Sahasra Kalasa Sthapana’ or the installation of thousand vessels.
