Underage drivers on police radar in Guntur

Reason with your wards or face counselling, parents told

Amidst a disturbing trend of young lives being snuffed out due to road rage, the Guntur Urban Police have decided to act tough against underage drivers. The sight of under age boys speeding away on bikes is not an unusual one on city roads. The police have tried to arrest the trend by issuing tickets but that has not made much of an impact. “Minors who drive without licence will be counselled along with parents at police stations. Incidents of underage drivers indulging in rash driving, triple riding, speed driving, snake driving and signal jumping are on the rise,’’ Guntur Urban SP Vijaya Rao said on Friday.

Mr. Vijaya Rao, who recently visited Japan as part of a study tour of the traffic management system, said the police were planning to set up a model traffic island and a replica of a traffic junction to create awareness among schoolchildren. The Road Transport Authority would also be involved in the project, he said.
