The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Timber Merchants, Saw-millers and Allied Industries have demanded the State government to take necessary steps to renew their licenses online.

At a media conference here on Sunday, Federation general secretary D. Rama Krishna said that the government was issuing waybills and ‘C’ form online. However, the forest transport permits (form-2) were not being issued online for the reasons best known the authorities.

Though the licenses have to be issued for three years, the Forest Department officials were issuing those only for a year. The saw millers have to do the rounds of the department office to get their licenses renewed. So, the government should make arrangements to renew the licenses automatically, they said.

“The government can collect up to Rs. 200 as against Rs.10 being charged for permit fee at present. It would fetch not less than Rs. 200 crore to the exchequer and also help merchants and sawmilllers, if forest permit is renewed online,” they said.

The merchants also requested the government to examine the feasibility of mutation of sawmill licenses as a cumbersome process is involved in the process as the file had to go to Supreme Court through State government, Central Empowered Committee and come back in the same channel to the local office. “these procedures need to be simplified,” they said.

There are 3,200 saw-millers in Andhra Pradesh, while timber depots would be in the range of 6,000 to 7,000. About 30,000 families are dependent on sawmills and timber depots in the State. Federation Krishna district president Pattaboyina Kondal Rao, vice-president Banka Venkataiah and others also spoke.
