Three persons go missing in Krishna river

Three agriculture workers — Meesala Narasimha Rao (29), Mariboina Gopala Rao (27) and Malla Ramana (35) — accidentally fell in the Krishna River on Saturday and went missing. They were natives of Ramannapet village in the Krishna district.

According to Krishna district Superintendent of Police G. Vijay Kumar, the victims were crossing the river on a ‘pantu’ (ballakattu) from Putlagudem village in Guntur district to Ramannapet village, when the accident occurred.

When the ‘pantu’was in the middle of the river, Gopala Rao, Narasimha Rao and Ramana, who were sitting on the edge, slipped into waters and drowned. On noticing the incident, villagers who were travelling on the ‘pantu’ raised an alarm and tried in vain to save them.

“Police along with the villagers searched for the bodies till evening. We are trying to find out on how many people were travelling on the ‘pantu’, whether permitted, why safety material was not provided to the passengers and other details,” said Chandarlapadu SI K. Durga Prasada Rao.

“The mishap occurred around 5.15 p.m. and the victims were returning after attending agriculture works in Guntur district,” said the Chandarlapadu police.
