TDP leaders not involved in sex abuse, says MP

The call money-cum-sex scandal is not as much about illicit money as it is about women safety, says Vijayawada MP Kesineni Nani.

“I don’t look at it as a money-related crime. My focus is on the larger issue of women safety at stake,” the MP told The Hindu. The MP who played a pivotal role in bringing to light the sordid saga of money, sex and sleaze, said the victims had approached him with a complaint. “When I heard the case, I was shocked and annoyed. I immediately spoke to the Commissioner of the Police and also to my party chief and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He also responded with equal concern,” the MP said.

He said the victims had shared with him shocking information about how they were being sexually abused after being administered sedatives. “It’s a very bad situation; if you leave the perpetrators of such crime, it will lead to serious law and order problem in the society,” he cautioned.

About the role of a few Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders in the scam, he said they were involved only to some extent. “As far as sex scandal is concerned, I don’t think any of the TDP leaders is involved in it. Seven persons, against whom Nirbhaya Act has been slapped, comprise the main gang. Others are only guilty of money-lending related irregularities,” he said.

The State, he maintained, is going through a very crucial phase and “it can’t afford to ignore such crimes, especially under the leadership of someone as dynamic as Mr Chandrababu Naidu,” he said.

The MP says he had never thought that the magnitude of the scam would grow this big in the days to come.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has made a statement in the Assembly that 66 YSR Congress leaders, 20 TDP leaders and 12 Congress leaders were involved in the scandal. He said there were 78 others accused whose political affiliation was not known.
