TDP in a bind to balance caste equation in 5 Guntur district seats

While the TDP had it easy as it had decided to retain all the sitting MLAs in the district, it finds itself in a bind to balance the caste equation in at least five segments.

Of the 12 sitting MLAs, 10 MLAs have been retained after Modugula Venugopala Reddy (Guntur West) and Ravela Kishore Babu (Prathipadu) have quit the party. The party now has to look for candidates in Guntur West, Mangalagiri, Narsaraopet, Bapatla and Macherla. It is likely to accommodate candidates from the Kapus, the Vysyas, the Muslims and the BCs.

In the Guntur West Assembly segment, the party mulled the idea of fielding a candidate from the Kapu community but may field a candidate from the Vysya community. Guntur MP Galla Jayadev too prefers it as the community has a significant presence and is recommending Maddali Giridhar, who had lost from Guntur East in 2014.

The choice for the West may well be taken keeping in view the past record where no candidate from the Kamma community had won after Chebrolu Hanumaiah in 1968. The party is grappling to find the right candidate for the Narsaraopet segment. Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao is likely to be retained in Sattenapalli and though his son Sivaram is trying to get the seat, the party is also considering a candidate from the Kapu community. In Macherla, it is examining the Reddy community chances and Chalama Reddy is the only option left. The Mangalagiri segment, which has a significant presence of the weaver community, could be given to a BC candidate.
