TD leaders pass buck to cops on venue change

June 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:59 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

Faced with criticism, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders are striving hard to pass the buck on police for the shifting the venue of Nava Nirmana Deeksha .

The TD senior leaders pleaded ignorance as to why the venue was shifted to Benz Circle. The party senior leaders say, “There is no room for politics. It is sheer decision of district collector and the police.”

However, the party sources say, the top brass of police city police shifted venue citing reasons such as traffic snarls in the city. As per the plans, four rallies from four directions reach the deeksha point at the Benz Circle. Chief Minister N. Chadrababu Naidu will also take part in a padayatra from Maris Stella College.

As many people might not be interested in walking under scorching heat (temperatures were high when the venue as shifted). Secondly, public mobilisation may be a difficult proposition if the venue were at Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex. The Benz Circle would appear crowded with floating population. The police also felt that it would be easier to divert traffic for four to five hours on highway rather than managing traffic snarls in the city for long hours, sources say.

The TD leaders say that no special emphasis was laid on public mobilisation as it was a government programme. However, the local units were hinted to turn up at the venue in large numbers. Each constituency should arrange 10 buses for the venue. Though it is announced that around 30,000 people would participate, we have our own apprehensions. The turn up might not cross 20,000,” said a senior leader, who didn’t want to be quoted. Police are making elaborate security arrangements for the government’s Nava Nirmana Deeksha at Benz Circle on Tuesday. The one-hour deeksha will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
