Students from many educational institutions took out rallies and conducted awareness programmes to mark the World AIDS Day in Amaravati on Saturday.
Students of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Mangalagiri, took the lead by staging street plays to promote this year’s theme “ Know Your Status”. There was still a large section of HIV positive people who were not aware that they had the disease.
The students led by professor and head of the Community and Family Medicine (CFM) department Rakesh Kakkar took out a rally at Gandalayapeta, a slum in Mangalagiri town. The students explained to the public the dangers of AIDS and steps to be taken to prevent it at the government primary school for Scheduled Castes and Tribes.
Dr. Kakkar explained that the aim of the events was to break the barriers and the stigmas around HIV tests and treatment. Prizes were given by the school head master Vara Kumar to the medicos who staged the plays. Nodal officer for the event Arti Gupta participated.
NSS, NCC students take out rally:
Nalanda Degree College principal M. Anuradha flagged off a rally taken out by NSS volunteers of the institution to mark the Day.
She said all steps should be taken to prevent the spread of AIDS mainly because there was no cure for the disease.
The volunteers should work to alleviate the misconceptions the public had on AIDS and the people suffering from the disease.
The cadets of the Fourth Andhra Girls NCC Battalion also took out a rally from the Nalanda Degree College to Swaraj Maidan. Commanding Officer Gugamalathy and others participated.
