The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the State government clarify its stand on encroachments on the Krishna riverbed upstream of Prakasam barrage in violation of rules. CPI (M) Polit Bureau member B.V. Raghavulu, accompanied by the party’s city secretary Ch. Babu Rao and other senior leaders, inspected the constructions on the river bed on Friday.

He wondered why the government was silent on these palatial constructions that were obstructing the free flow of the river. “Why is action not initiated against the constructions that came up along the riverbed in gross violation of rules?” he asked adding Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu owed an explanation on the issue.

At a time when the Capital Region Development Authority had initiated steps to acquire land for the construction of new capital by from farmers, the State government was, however, silent on the large scale encroachments on the river bed, he said.
