The YSR Congress has intensified its pitch seeking special category status to Andhra Pradesh.

The party MPs led by Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy staged a demonstration near the Gandhi statue on the Parliament premises in New Delhi in support of their demand for special category status to the State.

Financial crisis

Mr. Rajamohan Reddy said Andhra Pradesh was in financial crisis with huge fiscal and revenue deficits while it had not capital of its own, a year after its formation.

The Central government should come to the rescue of the State in ensuring its accelerated development on industrial and other fronts. Grant of special category status would go a long way in attracting industries and institutions in the new State and this would, in turn, help put development on the fast track, he said.

He recalled the visit of party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy to New Delhi in the past when he requested the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant special status for the State.
