The Task Force along with Penamalur police apprehended six persons for allegedly holding betting for the ongoing IPL matches.
The kingpin of the gang, Prabhakar alias Kumar, is absconding. The gang had collected large amounts of money for the match between Mumbai Indians and Sun Risers Hyderabad, which was held on May 13.
Disclosing the details to the media in Vijayawada on Wednesday, East Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) K.M. Maheswara Raju said: On a tip off that a gang was organizing betting from a house at Kanur village on the city outskirts, the team led by Penamalur CI J. Murali Krishna raided the place on Tuesday night and arrested the six-member gang.
The arrested include, M. Rajesh, P. Sunil, M. Murali Krishna, U. Chanti Babu, S. Nageswara Rao and K. Vijaya Nani. The accused hail from Krishna, Prakasam, West Godavari and Hyderabad districts and were in different occupations.
Equipment seized
Police seized two voice box sets, one television, two laptops, a four-wheeler, Rs.1.24 lakh and cell phones from their possession. Efforts are being made to find out the persons involved in the betting, with details such as mobile phone numbers and e-mails, said the ACP.
Sub-Inspector B.V. Rao who participated in the raid said that cases have been registered against the accused under Sections 3 and 4 of A.P. Gaming Act.
