SHG members to be involved in promoting energy saving

January 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The State government is actively considering a proposal to involve members of the self help groups to launch a massive campaign to take energy conservation measures to grass root level. The proposal was mooted in the light of findings of Bureau of Energy Efficiency which projected that the State has potential for saving around 24 per cent energy. Given the State’s energy requirement of 55,000 million units every year, saving the projected amount of energy would be of immense help to the State as well as the end users.

The government had commenced implementation of demand supply management based energy efficient lighting programme involving distribution of LED lights to domestic consumers as well as replacement of conventional street-lighting with energy efficient lights in this direction. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu wanted the officials concerned to monitor the progress of implementation of the DELP on a daily basis so that it could be completed across the State by the end of the next financial year.

The Chief Minister released calendars brought out by the State Energy Conservation Mission on Tuesday in the presence of Deputy Speaker Mandali Buddha Prasad, Energy, Infrastructure and Investments Secretary Ajay Jain and other senior officials. He said energy conservation required active participation of people from the grass root level to realise the targeted saving and people should be educated about the need to inculcate habit of energy conservation that was least cost and best option.

Moreover, the State had an advantage of being selected for the implementation of the Central government’s power for all programme as it would form the real base for attracting investments from the national and multinational agencies in the State. The State was accordingly in the process of formulating a separate strategy and action plan for making energy conservation a mass movement, he said.
