Renaming of Vizag as ‘Alluri Seetharama Raju district' sought

The relentless struggle of revolutionary freedom fighter Alluri Seetharama Raju against the British rulers for the protection of tribals and upholding their rights should provide the impetus for the struggle against bauxite mining in the agency areas of Visakhapatnam district, said Communist Party of India district council J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy.

He paid tributes to Alluri Seetharama Raju, on the occasion of his 87th death anniversary, at his statue on the Beach Road on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering, he said that the revolutionary freedom fighter's struggle had motivated several youth to jump into the freedom movement.

He said that it was the duty of the government to duly recognise the sacrifices made by such a great leader.

Inspiration

Mr. Satyanarayana sought that the government should rename Visakhapatnam district as ‘Alluri Seetharama Raju district' so that the sacrifices made by him would remain etched forever in the hearts of future generations. He said that the CPI would wage a battle against bauxite mining for the protection of tribal rights, drawing inspiration from Alluri's sacrifices.

He commended members of the Kshatriya Youth Wing, Visakhapatnam, for providing a permanent stairway to enable offering tributes to the revolutionary leader.

CPI district council secretary Chalasani Raghavendra Rao, city council secretary M. Pydiraju, executive members Ramgopal, Chandu, D. Markandeyulu, JD Naidu, G. Vamana Murthy and P. Veerraju were among those who attended.

Plea

Alluri Walkers Association: MLC MVS Sarma, who participated as chief guest at a meeting organised by the association, called upon youth to emulate the sacrifices made by Alluri Seetharama Raju.

He lamented that the rights of tribal people were being trampled upon from those days to the present day and Forest Rights Acts were not being implemented properly till date. He sought that Alluri's memorial at K.D. Peta should be developed by the Government as a tourist spot.

Association president K. Venkatapathi Raju presided. Association chief adviser Ch. Narasinga Rao spoke.Honorary president of the association T. Santha Ram, working president N. Venkata Rao and treasurer M. Koteswara Rao were among those who participated.

Bharateeya Janata Yuva Morcha: BJYM national secretary PVN Madhav said that not many people from the city were aware that Alluri Seetharama Raju belonged to Visakhapatnam.

He said that the BJYM fully supported the demand for renaming of Visakhapatnam district as Alluri Seetharama Raju district. City unit president KNP Chakravarthy called upon youth to emulate Alluri Seetharama Raju.

BJYM leaders L. Anand, P. Srinivas, Balla Chandrakala, Tammineni Govind and B. Suresh were among those who attended.
