Impressed by the city administration and discipline of motorists in the city of Hamburg in Germany, Mayor Koneru Sreedhar on Saturday said there was a need to lessen political involvement in development projects and change in the attitude of the people.

Mr. Sreedhar along with Municipal Commissioner J. Nivas held a press conference on their recent five-day official tour to Hamburg as part of the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) programme between the European Union and India.

Sharing his experiences from Hamburg, Mr. Sreedhar said, “If we need to grow into a city like Hamburg, people here should change. To be frank, unnecessary political involvement in development activities should end. Officials here are often pressured by politicians when they carry out development works. Also, a majority of the tax collected in Hamburg is used for public development unlike how we spend our taxes.”

Mr. Sreedhar said that most of the people in Hamburg use bicycles, and cars and motorists follow lane discipline though there were no barriers and medians. He said Hamburg canals were clean, beautiful and had no sewage inlets, while VMC was still looking for contractors to deal with sewage being released into the city canals.

Mr. Nivas said the civic body and Hamburg local government would be exchanging best projects being implemented in the respective cities. He said Hamburg administrative officials appreciated the underground smart bin project of the city and expressed interest to emulate it in their city.

Mr. Nivas said that VMC was looking forward to implement bicycle sharing, citizen feedback platform, and plastic management being implemented in Hamburg with the help of administration. Officials from the German city would visit the city in February to take stock of the projects here, he said.

Additional Commissioner D. Chandrasekhar, TDP floor leader G. Hari Babu and others were present.
