Ramesh may be YSRC Mayor candidate

March 27, 2014 11:07 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 10:51 pm IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The YSR Congress appears to have taken its call on the Mayoral candidate for the upcoming civic polls. Highly placed sources within the party said that Konejeti Ramesh from division 39 in the One Town area of Vijayawada (West) constituency will be the candidate. Though it is yet to be formally announced, it is being seen as a strategic move to appease all communities in the city.

Ramesh is from the Vysya community that has a dominant presence in the One Town area or Vijayawada West. The total strength of Vysyas in the city is about 70,000 and of which over 40,000 live in One Town area alone.

While Ramesh is a Vysya, the probable MLA candidate for Vijayawada (West) is a Muslim. The party’s MP candidate is from the Kamma community and they are likely to field a Kapu leader from Vijayawada (East). There is also a talk that a leader from the Reddy community will be allotted the Central constituency.

“This is all part of the balancing act, as today’s election has become highly caste based,” said the source.

Konejeti Ramesh’s father Konejeti Ramanaiah was the former Deputy Mayor. The total number of voters in the One Town area is about 11,600 and out of which 4,000 are from the Telugu Vysya community and about 2,400 are from the Marwari community.
