The rain that lashed Vijayawada for two consecutive days affected vehicular movement across various parts of the city.
The heavy rains resulted in the creation of potholes on major roads in areas such as Ajit Singh Nagar, Auto Nagar, Kanuru, Mogalrajpuram and NTR Circle. “We have appealed to the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation several times to fix the roads and cover the open sewers near my house, but all our pleas fell on deaf ears,” said J.C. Chowdhary, a resident of Mogalrajpuram.
Areas such as Ashok Nagar and Tadigadapa reported water logging on several roads affecting the flow of traffic. “Due to the flooding, we fear falling into the potholes on the road. Hence, we are forced to ride on pavements,” said M. Ashok, a daily wage labourer.
In low-lying areas such as Krishnalanka, Ramalingeswara Nagar and Balaji Nagar, the situation was bad as the rain added to the woes of the residents, who were recovering from the recent floods that had submerged their homes for days.
Moreover, the rain has exposed the locals in the area to the likelihood of contracting water-borne and vector-borne diseases, the cases of which have been reportedly rising in the city.
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall across coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema region for the next few days.
