Spells of heavy rain gave respite from the summer heat to people in many parts of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. Gales and hailstorms, however, wreaked havoc at some places. Temperatures came down across the State as the southwest monsoon advanced into peninsular India.
A hailstorm followed by a downpour were reported from Obulavaripalle in Kadapa district, causing major damage to horticulture crops, which officials are assessing. Electric poles fell down at many places, causing disruption of power supply. Some areas around the district headquarters of Kadapa also had brief spells of rain.
People in Tirupati and a few other areas in Chittoor district experienced cool weather due to intermittent rain.
There was a hailstorm in Tirupati in the evening. Rain was reported from Agency areas and a few other places in Visakhapatnam district. Anantapur district continued to be bone-dry as rains bypassed its parched landscape.
There was a marked improvement in weather in the south coastal districts also. Temperatures came down considerably in most areas under the influence of the monsoon. Officials were asked to be on alert in view of the possibility of more showers in the next few days.
