The Department of Posts on Tuesday released a special cover on world-famous scientist Stephen Hawking here in which Andhra Pradesh Space Application Centre secretary and ISRO scientist K. V. Ramana took part as chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Poster Master General K. Balasubramanian said it was a special day for philatelists as the cover in memory of an outstanding scientist was released.

‘Philately a good hobby’

He said the Postal Department was recognising the contributions of great people to society by releasing their stamps and covers. “We want to make them part of history as the younger generation will learn more about them and shape themselves in a progressive manner.”

Postmaster General Radhika Chakravarthy said the department had conducted Deendayal Sparsh Yogana’s competitions to promote philately among schoolchildren. “As many as 1114 school children took part in the competitions and 40 were short-listed for the annual scholarships of ₹6,000,” she said. She exhorted students to pursue the hobby of philately as it helps them think creatively.

Mr. Ramana said youngsters should emulate the scientist’s fighting spirit.
