The bathing ghats on River Krishna teemed with devotees who thronged to observe ‘Poli Swargam’ the lamp lighting ritual that marks the actual conclusion of Karthika Masam.

Devotees said the ritual that witnessed huge rush should serve as a lesson for the district administration to make preparations for the Krishna Pushkaram to be conducted in August 2016 and ensure proper crowd management during the 12-day event. Braving the biting chill of the winter morning, the devout, especially women, reached the bathing ghats, in the early hours to take a holy dip in the River Krishna and pray for well-being of their families. Durga Ghat, which is close to Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam, was choc-a-block with devotees, who turned up irrespective of age.

The turnout was moderate till 5 a.m. and it swelled by 7 a.m. forcing police to deploy additional men to control people.

Women with their young children tucked in their arms, heads and ears covered with the pallu of their saris to escape the winter chill came in groups to complete the rituals associated with the occasion.

At one stage, police stopped devotees from entering Durga Ghat which was already crowded.

Using ropes, the police controlled the movement of devotees. As entry was restricted for a while because of rush, a few devout tried to enter the ghat by jumping the compound wall through the staircase of nearby foot-over-bridge.

Shower baths were arranged for the convenience of devotees, who could not take a dip in the river.

The women devotees lit deepam in the trunks of a banana tree. They set afloat miniature boats made of paper and banana tree trunks carrying the lit earthen lamps in the river.

The devout observe ‘Poli Swargam’, a day after Amavasya (new moon day) of Karthika Masam.
