J. Nivas assumed office as the 22nd Commissioner of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation here on Wednesday.

Mr. Nivas, a 2010 batch IAS officer who served as Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, has been posted as the city commissioner in the recent shuffling of officers in the State.

In charge commissioner D. Chandra Sekhar, additional commissioner (projects) M. Narasimha Murthy and other officials of the corporation welcomed Mr. Nivas.

‘Use social media platforms’

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Nivas called on people to use social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Puraseva App and VMC App to lodge complaints regarding civic issues. Mr. Nivas said the city witnessed major development during the tenure of his predecessor G. Veerapandian and earned recognition for organising Krishna Puskarams.

‘Develop greenery’

He said many development works would be taken up in the city in the coming days and added that focus would be on ensuring seamless transportation of garbage to dumping yard, implementation of all civic schemes and providing basic amenities and infrastructure.

Mr. Nivas asked officials concerned to develop greenery on margins of the national highway stretch between Ramavarapadu Ring and airport at Gannavaram also called as green path.

Mr. Nivas, who inspected the stretch on Wednesday, found that greenery was only developed on the median and stressed the need for greenery on the roadsides where garbage is being dumped and burnt at many spots. He asked authorities to issue notices to the management of Ashok Leyland showroom as per the Public Health Act upon finding that they were dumping garbage on the road.

Later, he checked the collection of garbage at Gunadala and in other areas. He called on authorities to provide additional dumper bins at required locations and ensure garbage is not strewn on roads.
