Montford Social Institute, a local NGO working in 20-odd slum habitations in and around Vijayawada city distributed solar lanterns to over 100 slum-dwellers in Autonagar, near telephone exchange office.

“Montford Social Institute works for housing rights of the poor in slum habitations besides imparting free tuitions to children of these areas. Most of these slum-dwellers do not have electricity supply. The local municipal authorities refuse to come to their rescue as their habitations are unauthorised,” said organisation’s city coordinator Sk. Ali Sha.

The members also said keeping in view the children’s hardships in the evening hours, they chose to give them these lights which run on solar power.
