Naidu flags off electric cars, tourism bus

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said his government would encourage use of electric vehicles in a big way.

Mr. Naidu flagged off an eco-friendly battery car at Mangalagiri in Guntur district. The vehicles are being launched by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), the Mahindra Electric and the Zoomcar.

He said these vehicles were already being operated in Pune, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Mysore and said the government would encourage any kind of innovations.

Secretary, Department of Tourism, Language and Culture Mukesh Kumar Meena said these electric cars would be made available for self-driving at the Gannavaram airport, the Benz Circle and the Secretariat.

Mahindra Electric CEO Mahesh Babu said launch of these vehicles would mark the first step towards a revolution in shared electric mobility in the State.

Joint founder and CEO of Zoomcar Greg Meran said to begin with, 15 vehicles would be made available and based on the demand, the number would be increased.

The Chief Minister also flagged off a Volvo-make bus acquired by the APTDC. Corporation Chairman Jairam Reddy, Mr. Meena, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) CEO Himanshu Shukla and others were present.
