The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) is keen on producing shrimp seed indigenously and supplying it to farmers. In fact, MPEDA is awaiting the Union government’s nod for the project. Speaking at a meeting of aqua farmers, organised by the Fisheries Department recently, MPEDA Deputy Director (Aquaculture) S. Kandan had announced that the Centre was ready to promote the ‘Make in India’ brood of finer quality. “If the Centre gives permission, we are ready to produce disease-free shrimp seed in the country and supply it to farmers at reduced cost,” Dr. Kandan had said at the meeting, which was attended by Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas and Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana.

The Ministers had promised that they would discuss the matter with Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Seetaraman and Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

There are more than 78 reservoirs in A.P. If the government gives permission to MPEDA, we will supply SPF seed to farmers in AP, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and other States, thereby enhancing export revenue.

S. Kandan,

Deputy Director (Aquaculture)
