Urban areas in the district have witnessed more migration than rural areas as people have been continuously on the move seeking better livelihood opportunities, the draft Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) has revealed.
The SECC shows that the population in 13 municipalities and 3,057 enumeration blocks in Guntur Municipal Corporation have decreased by 1.97 lakh in 2014 when compared to previous census held in 2011. The SECC done in 2011 listed that there were 16.57 lakh people in urban areas while the 2014 census listed 14.57 lakh people indicating that migration is more rapid in urban pockets.
The census in rural areas covering 6,798 blocks in 57 mandals shows that migration was less profound in rural areas.
While the 2011 census listed 32.33 lakh people in rural areas, the same in 2014 listed 32.04 lakh.
Similarly, the number of households in urban areas had dropped by 38,226 while it was 16,108 in rural areas.
