The slip of girders of Gunadala flyover which is under construction has created a furore in the city. But, the fact is that the city wakes up to such impending dangers every day as most of the bridges constructed across Ryve’s, Eluru and other canals are either in bad condition or are on the verge of collapse. The footpaths of many bridges are in bad shape reflective of the gloomy side of the administration.

The best example is the bridge across Ryve’s canal near Alankar theatre. This bridge is caving in, posing a danger to pedestrians. But, neither the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) nor Roads and Building (R&B) Department has taken initiative to avert the imminent danger. The footpaths of the bridge have almost collapsed and there are no proper railings as well. Still, the pedestrians are seen using the bridge as there are no sign boards.

The problem was highlighted in these columns more than one and half years ago. There are no concrete measures to renovate or repair the bridge so far though the VMC put up makeshift barricades. The Corporation authorities say that there was no response from the contractors though tenders were invited thrice. It is one of the many bridges that speaks volumes on the indifferent attitude of the elected representatives and officials.

There are four bridges in Gunadala that lead to flyover which is under construction. None of them is motorable. In fact, three of them are in a dilapidated condition. The VMC washed off its hands by putting caution board that the bridge is meant only for pedestrians and two wheelers. But, still heavy vehicles, including school buses ply on these bridges causing agony to the parents.

The footpath bridge near Ramavarappadu is still in use though it is in a dilapidated condition.

The skew bridge near Ramalingeswara Nagar is another classic example. The locals say that pieces of concrete fall off now and then from the lower portion of the bridge, which carries heavy traffic coming from national highway and city as well. And, the list goes on. The railing of bridge on Eluru canal near railway station, Nidamanuru bridge on Ryves’ canal, Sitaramapuram bridge are some of the bridges that need immediate attention.
