A college girl suffered critical injuries when a person attacked her with a sickle for allegedly rejecting his marriage proposal at Kavitam village in the district on Wednesday.

The accused, M. Sudhakar Reddy, who was deserted by his wife, too consumed pesticide after the incident.

According to the local people, Sudhakar was reportedly stalking the victim, who is pursuing M.Sc in a private college. She stays in her uncle’s house.

The community elders held a panchayat and warned the accused, who promised to change his behaviour. However, Sudhakar allegedly started harassing the girl since a few months and was reportedly pestering her for marriage.

On Wednesday, when the girl was going to college, the accused pounced on her and attacked her with a sickle at Poduru causing multiple injuries.

Both were rushed to Palakollu Government Hospital, from where the girl was shifted to Asram Hospital, Eluru, for better treatment, said Narsapuram DSP K. Nageswara Rao.

“Doctors said the condition of the girl is stable. Sudhakar is undergoing treatment at Palakollu. The Poduru police registered a case and took up investigation”, the DSP said.
