Following considerable inflows into the Prakasam Barrage, about 250 cusecs of water was released on Thursday into the eastern and western delta for the drinking water needs of residents downstream.

Officials warned residents living on canal bunds to be cautious following the opening of the floodgates.

The gates had been closed in the last week of April due to the depleting water levels in the barrage.

Krishna Collector Babu A said inflows into the barrage had increased considerably due to heavy rains upstream and the water level had reached 12 ft.

It was decided to raise the gates to maintain the water levels in the barrage. Officials said nearly 20,000 cusecs of water is expected to flow into the barrage in the next couple of days.

Mr. Babu said depending on the inflows into the barrage, release of water would be stepped up to 1,500 cusecs in a phased manner.

He instructed officials to monitor the water levels in the barrage at regular intervals.
