Karthika pournami celebrated in city

People visited various temples in good numbers in the city on ‘Karthika Pournami’, the festival celebrated on full moon day of ‘Karthika Masam’ of Telugu calendar, on Friday. The temples reverberated with chants of Lord Siva.

Devotees started streaming in from early hours of the day to take a holy dip in river Krishna. The bathing ghats, more particularly Durga Ghat in the city, came alive with devotees pouring in from 3 a.m. onwards to take a holy dip. Young and the old took a dip and visited Kanakadurga temple atop Indrakeeladri.

Women performed special rituals and lit lamps towards the evening. They lit oil lamps with a pack of 365 wicks at Pata Sivalayam and other temples and in front of basil (Tulasi) plant. The devotees formed serpentine queues to offer prayers to Lord Siva at temples such as Patha Sivalayam, Kasi Visveswara temple near Challapalli Bunglow. Priests performed Ekadasa Mahanyasapurvaka Rudrabhishekam, Rudram, Namakam and Chamakam in Siva temples.

On this day, the devotees prefer to perform the ‘Satyanarayana Vratam.’ Various temples including Uttaradi Mutt, performed ‘Satyanarayana Vratam’. Saibaba temple near Maris Stella College was jam-packed with devotees.
