The indoor sub-station on the Museum Road dedicated for the Chief Minister’s camp office is in advanced stages of completion and likely to be ready by August 15.
Being built at a cost of Rs. 3 crore, the sub-station will have two transformers of five million volt amperes capacity each and six feeders, which will supply power to the camp office located a few hundred meters away. The equipment alone costs Rs 2.5 crore.
Steps are being taken for setting up eight more such substations in the city keeping the spurt in demand, according to official sources.
A top official of Southern Power Distribution Company Limited told The Hindu that an indoor sub-station (which can be installed in a building, unlike the ones that require large parcels of land) was needed for the CM’s camp office to avoid any interruption.
The camp office would have sophisticated electronic gadgets for telecommunication and other paraphernalia, which require power supply round-the-clock for smooth functioning.
Line losses
Meanwhile, SPDCL is making efforts to bring down the technical (line) losses from about 4.5 per cent. Plans are being drafted for replacing the old lines with new ones and also underground cables wherever possible. The cost and other factors are being worked out.
The APTransco is also doing its bit for improving supply. The most important projects are a couple of gas-insulated substations which cost around Rs. 100 crore each.
