Protesting against the cancellation of Telugu medium in municipal schools in the State, MLCs, educationists, intellectuals, scholars, students and members of the civil society observed a hunger strike here on Sunday under the umbrella of ‘Mathru Basha Madyama Vedika’ and an organisation was formed to fight for the cause.
The protesters led by MLC V. Balasubramanyam, Prof. G. Umamaheswara Rao from the Hyderabad Central University and others demanded that the government immediately withdraw the GO and allow students to pursue education in Telugu medium at least up to upper primary.
Corporate power
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Balasubramanyam alleged that the State government has been experimenting with people of Andhra Pradesh and as part of it a corporate power in education is also trying to rule the educational institutions of the government.
“Though the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department did not have any power a GO cancelling Telugu medium has been brought and the HRD ministry failed to intervene. A corporate college is now also providing syllabus to Anganwadi schools,” he said.
“Education is only possible with mother tongue and it is proved in many advanced countries. But this Telugu Desam government is forcing English on its students,” he said. In a bid to save the future of Telugu, the campaign would be intensified, he added.
