RailTel, Google, BSNL jointly offers broadband, broad width services

RailTel Corporation of India Limited General Manager (Marketing) Shailesh Tiwari has said the RailTel will equip 400 railway stations across the country with high speed Wi-Fi services during 2016-17.

As part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India Programme, the Public Sector Unit (PSU) working under the Ministry of Railways, is planning to provide more facilities to the passengers, said Mr. Tiwari, who was here on Thursday for the formal launch of Wi-Fi services in Vijayawada railway station.

Speaking to The Hindu , the general manager said RailTel in association with Google would provide the services to 100 stations this year. The company had many plans for the passengers in the coming days, he said.

“A1, A and B Category stations such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Nizamuddin, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Ranchi, Ernakulam Junction, Patna, Ujjain, Gorakhpur, Guntur, Eluru, Nellore, Rajamahendravaram, Tadepalligudem and other stations would be provided with Wi-Fi facility by this year end.”

The RailTel has plans to offer the services at the tourist places across the country soon. The company, with the help of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is providing broadband services to households in villages.

Under the High Capacity Pan-India Optical Fibre Network, the RailTel is extending broadband facility to IITs, engineering colleges and other educational institutions in Puducherry, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and seven more states in the North would be provided with the facility, which will provide more access for students to internet.

“We are also planning to offer bandwidth services to various telecom services and provide Wi-Fi services on moving trains,” said Mr. Tiwari.

Vijayawada Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Kumar, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager N.V. Satyanarayana, RailTel Additional General Manager Suresh Reddy, Senior Manager Rambabu and other officials were present.
