: Teachers in government schools addicted to laxity must watch out. A new tool is being introduced in the fresh academic year (2016-17) to effectively check their lackadaisical approach. A ‘performance indicator’ is proposed to be used to gauge teaching standards of educators.

To assess the working standards of teachers, headmasters, District Education Officers, Deputy Education Officers and other officials of the Education Department, certain parameters would be brought into use to strengthen the department and the school education system as a whole.

“This is to ensure accountability that will ultimately help raise the quality of education in Government-run schools,” said Minister for School Education Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Wednesday. He said assessment of teachers would run parallel to the evaluation of the students’ academic performance and responsibility would be fixed on non-performing teachers or officials who could even attract punishments like transfers.

The Minister, along with Gannavaram MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi, made a surprise visit to the Zilla Parishad High School at Atukuru village of Unguturu mandal in Krishna district. Interacting with the students, teachers and the headmaster, he assessed the attendance registers of both, students and the teachers.

Training programme

The Minister also enquired with the school headmaster about total enrolments in the school in last five years, the SSE results and the causes of a declining trend in enrolments.

He also enquired about mid-day-meal scheme and toilet facility in the school.

Responding to the officials’ observation that the private schools offered English medium which was attracting people, the Minister said effective steps were being taken to address the issue. He said in every district, one school would be groomed into a model school with all the facilities.

Funds to the tune of Rs. 39 lakh have been released for construction of six rooms in the school, established in 1960.

As part of its attempts to integrate technology in teaching, the government has given 10,000 tablets to be distributed across the State. Distribution of these tabs to high school headmasters, Mandal Education Officers, District Education Officers and Deputy Education Officers would be preceded by a training programme to equip with the nitty-gritty of the technological aspects, said Krishna DEO A. Subba Reddy.
